Schumer Pushes FDA To Ban E-Cig Flavors Marketed To Kids

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- With the top official in the Food and Drug Administration on his way out, Sen. Chuck Schumer is worried that progress on e-cigarette regulation could go up in smoke.

Schumer says e-cigarette use has been exploding among high schoolers leading more to take up regular smoking as well.

He had been working with FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb to ban kid-friendly e-cigarette flavors such as candy cane, whipped cream and juice box.

But Gottlieb just announced he plans on leaving his post at the end of the month.

"I am publicly calling on Commissioner Gottlieb to ensure the ban on kid-friendly e-cig flavors is enacted within the month before he leaves," Schumer said.

Schumer says he's concerned if it doesn't happen, the Trump administration's next nominee may abandon the efforts.

"I'm worried if the past is prologue that the administration may choose someone far more friendly to industry," Schumer said.

He is also calling for e-cigarettes to officially be designated as tobacco products, leading to more strict regulation.

"In an administration known for cozying up to special interests and huge corporations, Gottlieb was different," Schumer said.
