Schumer Warns Sunscreen Pills Don't Work

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Pills that claim to protect sunbathers from harmful effects of the sun are bogus, according to the federal government, and now there's a move to get them off store shelves.

Now that the beach weather is here, some consumers have been turning to the pills instead of using sunscreen.

"If you think a pill is better than slobbering all that stuff all over you wouldn't you want a pill? The trouble is the pills don't work," said Sen. Charles Schumer.

The FDA has issued a warning that the pills are ineffective and don't protect users from UV rays.

But they're still on the market.

Schumer is calling on the FDA to ban the pills.

"These companies know the pills are being sold under false pretenses, why allow them?" Schumer said.
