NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Anita Manfredonia always dreamed of starting her own business.

Now she owns her own fashion boutique Pippy & Lily in Flushing, New York.

“I could always picture myself in my own store selling beautiful things,” Manfredonia told Joe Connolly in this week’s week's Small Business Spotlight, sponsored by BNB Bank — "Community Banking from Montauk to Manhattan."

Anita learned every aspect of the retail business through her career before going out on her own.

Anita graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology and earned her degree in buying and merchandising.

She switched gears and realized she had a passion for selling cosmetics and fragrances. She worked as a representative for Lancôme and an executive for corporate Macy’s before opening her own boutique.

“I love teaching people how to put makeup on, and ultimately they felt fabulous when they left. I love the feeling of making someone happy,” said Manfredonia.

She had a five-year plan, starting small with trunk shows and turning a storefront into an events location. “I had to make it into a destination location because there was no foot traffic,” said Manfredonia.

Anita hosts women’s empowerment events with St. John’s University and local non-profits. Anita supports women in business. She reached out to local schools and business to be a part of her boutique.

Pippy & Lily hosted an event with two St. John’s sororities from now and then to raise money for someone who could not afford a scholarship at the university.

Over the past six years, Pippy & Lily has become more than a fashion boutique. “It is not just a place to go shopping but a place to experience,” said Manfredonia.
