TRENTON, N.J. (WCBS 880) — Sports betting in New Jersey has proven more popular than expected with money continuing to roll in.

"I'm personally thrilled," said Assemblyman Ralph Caputo, chairman of the assembly’s Gaming and Tourism Committee.

Since gambling was legalized in the state, there has been a nearly $8 million increase in taxes.

"We need revenue. The state needs revenue, obviously, regardless of how people feel, how it's been spent over the past, the pension funds, etcetera. There are so many things,” Caputo said.

But, more gambling means more problems.

Neva Pryor, who heads the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey, said they’ve seen an increase in addiction.

"We're seeing, I would say, roughly a 25 percent increase in phone calls,” she told WCBS 880.

Pryor hopes problem gamblers know they have a place to turn to for help.
