Stamford Residents Prepare For I-95 Construction Nightmare

May 31, 2019 - 12:20 pm

STAMFORD, Conn. (WCBS 880) -- Construction crews will begin a bridge replacement project this weekend where residents of Stamford and the surrounding towns along the I-95 corridor are preparing for a possible traffic nightmare.

The project known as accelerated bridge construction is set to begin on Friday at 11 p.m. and continue through Monday at 5 a.m.

Police officials along with the Department of Transportation have been warning drivers about the I-95 closure at Exit 9 in Stamford going in both directions for several weeks.

"They'll be able to take these temporary ramps on and off. But they're 25-mile-an hour ramps, two lanes. Traffic is going to back up." says Connecticut DOT Engineer Dominic Larossa.

Commuters will have to get off the highway as crews replace the Route 1 Bridge.

"They're basically multiple axle heavy duty truck kind of axle machines with hydraulics that are going to drive underneath the span put dunnage which is like temporary supports. Lift it up, then drive it, " explains DOT Project manager Luis Aveeno. "It's all hydraulically, computer controlled where the elevations don't change and it's controlled the whole time."

The same location will be closed next weekend as well to allow crews to complete the project.
