State Legislature Approves Bill Banning Cat Declawing

ALBANY (WCBS 880) — The New York Legislature on Tuesday passed a bill to ban the practice of declawing cats.

Both the Senate and the Assembly approved the measure and sent it to be signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The governor has yet to say if he supports the bill. If he signs it, New York would be the first state to ban the practice that is already illegal in much of Europe, as well as Los Angeles, San Francisco and Denver.

The law would subject veterinarians to $1,000 fines for performing the procedure.

Supporters of the ban say the practice is cruel and barbaric since it involves the amputation of a cat's toes back to the first knuckle.

The New York State Veterinary Medical Society previously opposed the bill, saying the procedure should be allowed as a last resort for cats that won't stop scratching furniture or humans.
