NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Police are investigating a fatal shooting by a state trooper early Thursday morning.

New York State Police say an officer shot and killed a man they say tried to climb into the trooper’s vehicle after they stopped to talk to him as he walked along Interstate-84.

Troopers were checking on the man near exit 5A in Montgomery at around 2 a.m., according to authorities, after receiving reports of a disabled vehicle on the road. It's unclear if the man was connected to said vehicle.

They say the man was no cooperative and at one point tried to enter the police vehicle.

It’s unclear what commands were given to the man, but when he would not comply, one trooper shot him.

He was then taken to Orange Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

His identity was not immediately released as the investigation continues.
