NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Lady Liberty needs America’s help.

The foundation for the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island has turned to a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for a new museum, which they hope to open in May 2019.

Currently, exhibits are being housed in the pedestal, but it’s become too cramped to hold all the artifacts.

The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island Foundation's Director of Public Affairs Suzanne Mannion says that she believes this campaign will work as people have always offered assistance in the past.

“A gentleman named Joseph Pulitzer, who was a newspaper publisher at the time, he offered to print people's names in his newspaper, if they donated to the cause and over 120,000 people stepped up and they gave the contributions necessary to build the pedestal that we see today,” Mannion explained.

People also donated for the statue’s centennial restoration in the 1980’s.

The $100 million campaign is ambitious, but has its perks. Those who donate a substantial amount may be given a hard hat tour with the museum’s architect and exhibit designers.
