Suffolk Police Arrest 2 Accused Of Scamming People On Letgo App

January 16, 2019 - 2:22 pm

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — Suffolk County police have arrested two men who were allegedly involved in a scam to defraud people through the popular app letgo.

The app is used for exchanging items, but authorities say at least five people were robbed when they met with sellers offering cell phones.

The robberies took place over the course of five months, with the most recent occurring on Dec. 31 at the Mastic-Shirley LIRR station.

In almost every incident, police say Ronnie Langhorn, 19, or Mitchell Washington, 21, threatened victims with a knife or shoved them to the ground before fleeing with the victim’s money.

Both were arrested Wednesday and charged with robbery. Langhorn was also charged with grand and petit larceny.

Suffolk Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart says letgo users should verify seller on the app and always meet in a public space to avoid similar scams.
