Suspect Calls 911 On Himself After Fatal Shooting On Long Island

January 22, 2019 - 1:33 pm

AMITYVILLE, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — Police arrested a suspect who allegedly called 911 on himself after a man was fatally shot on Long Island Tuesday morning.

Authorities received the call from 34-year-old Mark Cheatham at around 7:40 a.m. saying he had just shot somebody at South Park Place and Albany Avenue in Amityville.

Police say Cheatham was on foot when he shot 39-year-old Michael Jackson, who was found inside his vehicle a short distance from where Cheatham was arrested.

Jackson had been driving at the time of the shooting and his vehicle slammed into a parked SUV. No other injuries were reported.

The 39-year-old was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities said the shooting did not appear to be random.

“They knew each other, we don't know for the extent of period, we also don't know why they had a disagreement or falling out and that’s all part of the investigation," said Police Chief Gerard Gigante.

He speculates the two might have worked together in the past and noted the two lived in close proximity.

It's unclear what lead to the shooting.
