Suspect In Custody After Brutal Subway Attack On Elderly Woman

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Police have charged a man who they believe is the attacker seen on cellphone video repeatedly punching and kicking a 78-year-old woman on a Bronx subway train.

Police say 36-year-old Marc Gomez of Yonkers was charged with harassment and assault. 

"The subject wanted for the brutal subway attack of an elderly woman IS IN CUSTODY," NYPD Chief Dermot Shea tweeted earlier on Saturday. "Thank you to the worldwide community for the tremendous assistance." 

The attack happened onboard a northbound 2 train just after 3 a.m. on March 10, according to the NYPD. 

Police said the woman was sitting alone on the train when the man suddenly started to punch and kick her numerous times in the face and about the body.

The man got off the train at the 238th Street-Nereid Avenue stop.

The woman got off at the next station where she was met by EMS, who were called to the scene after a bystander alerted an officer at the at Wakefield-241st Street stop, the New York Post reported.

She was treated on the scene for bleeding and swelling.
