4 Hurt After SUV Crashes Into Restaurant In Chelsea

July 30, 2018 - 3:48 pm

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Four people were injured Monday after a sport-utility vehicle slammed into a restaurant in Chelsea.

As WCBS 880’s Kevin Rincon reported, the black SUV crashed into Gogi Grill – a small Korean restaurant at Sixth Avenue and 17th Street – around 2:30 p.m. Monday.

The windshield of the black Lincoln Navigator was completely smashed into pieces, and the airbags were all deployed.

At least one car was hit before the driver of the SUV took a turn onto the sidewalk.

"It looked like they were trying to avoid a pedestrian and that's why they swerved,” said witness Bianca Maldonado, who works at the restaurant and heard the crash. “I believe there were about three or four people in the car and there was a guy lying on the street."

Maldonado rushed out to see what happened, while Ben watched as first responders arrived within minutes.

"I saw them take away a bunch of people on stretchers," Ben said. "I saw one guy in a brace, another one with blood all over him."

There was also a small gray car that may have been sideswiped before the driver took a sharp left onto the sidewalk.

The investigation shut down Sixth Avenue to traffic.
