NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- A tire came off a private sanitation truck and smashed through the windshield of an SUV, killing the 64-year-old driver on the Gowanus Expressway in Brooklyn.

It happened on the inbound side of the Gowanus near 7th Avenue just north of Fort Hamilton Parkway around 6:45 a.m. Wednesday.

According to police, the victim, a maintenance worker at NYPD headquarters, was driving a Toyota RAV4 eastound on the Gowanus near Exit 3 when authorities said a tire "became unhinged" from a truck going westbound, striking the SUV and shattering its windshield. The SUV then crashed into a barrier.

The SUV driver was pronounced dead at a hospital.

There were no other occupants in the vehicle.

The truck driver stayed at the scene. No charges have been filed yet.
