Swastikas Found Inside New Jersey High School

HILLSDALE, N.J. (WCBS 880) – Swastikas were found at a New Jersey high school Tuesday, prompting a partial campus closure and an alert to parents.

The three swastikas were etched into bathroom stalls at Pascack Valley High School over the last week, which Superintended P. Eric Gunderson says has disgusted the community.

“I look at this act that a student is engaging in as an incredibly hateful and yet also cowardly act,” Gunderson said.

He explained that the school has over 70 security cameras throughout the building, but noted there was no surveillance within the bathrooms, making it difficult to identify the culprit.

Parents received an email from Gunderson regarding the incidents on Tuesday afternoon.

“We cannot let an individual, or small group of individuals, who spreads a message of hate, become a cloud casting a shadow over our wonderful community,” Gunderson wrote. “Pascack Valley's students and educators strive toward mutual respect and understanding, which has and continues to shine in so many ways.”

Hillsdale Police is now investigating the matter and the person responsible will most likely face charges.

Gunderson said the school will hold discussions about caring, compassion and respect in light of the incident.
