Thousands Sign Petition To Rename Trump Tower Street After Obama

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Tens of thousands of people have signed a petition to rename a one-block stretch of Fifth Avenue in New York City after former President Barack Obama – the block that’s home to Trump Tower.

In May, Los Angeles honored the former president by renaming a stretch of Rodeo Road after No. 44. The petition asks Mayor Bill de Blasio and the City Council to do the same in New York City.

"We request the New York City Mayor and City Council do the same by renaming a block of Fifth Avenue after the former president whose many accomplishments include: saving our nation from the Great Recession; serving two completely scandal-free terms in office; and taking out Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind September 11th, which killed over 3,000 New Yorkers," creator Elizabeth Rowin wrote on the petition’s page.

The petition began as a joke last year, but gained steam recently, according to Rowin. She notes that she was inspired in December when she saw a joke about it on Twitter.

"I honestly started it as a joke," she told Newsweek. "I saw a comedian joke about how it would make Trump so mad if it was named after former President Obama and thought why not."

The petition gained traction again after a Tweet referencing it went viral.

Already, some City Council members have said they will look into the possibility of renaming the street, but there has been no concrete support from local lawmakers.

The biggest challenge for the renaming process will be a New York regulation that prohibits a street renaming if the honoree is still alive.
