‘Whale Of A Time’: Three Whales Spotted At Jones Beach

JONES BEACH, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- Three whales breached near the Jones Beach Monday afternoon, creating a rare sight for some beach goers.

The whales, which were reportedly pilot whales, were spotted just before noon about 1,000 yards from the shore.

“For the whales to come this close is unusual,” said George Gorman, state parks deputy regional director for Long Island.

Gorman said a confluence of factors may have helped this rare occurrence happen, including the heat warming up the water, initiatives to clean the ocean and fish migrating closer to the coastline.

“We've seen an increase over the last five years of bay fish and bunker fish close to shore,” he explained.

If you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of one, you may be out of luck as Gorman noted the whales appeared to be on the move.

“They were heading west,” Gorman said. “They’re heading toward New York City, so we think they were tourists who just happened to be in the area.”
