Port Authority Reconsiders Doing Business With Trash Hauler Involved In Deadly Freak Accident

ELIZABETH, N.J. (WCBS 880) -- The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is reconsidering doing business with a trash hauler involved in a deadly freak accident on the Gowanus Expressway.

Last week, a civlian employee of the NYPD was killed when a tire flew off a Century Waste Services garbage truck and smashed into his windshield as he was driving to work last Wednesday.

The New York Post reports Century Waste Services has racked up 74 safety violations for problems with tires, brakes and wheel fasteners since 2016.

Century Waste does business with the Port Authority and a spokesman confirms they are reconsidering nearly $500,000 in contracts and reviewing their own vetting process.

A spokeswoman for Centgury Waste expresses condolences to the family of the man who was killed and said they are cooperating with the investigation.

So far, no criminal charges have been filed.
