TSA Has Short-Term Solution To Absent Workers During Shutdown

NEWARK, N.J. (WCBS 880) – TSA workers are still calling out sick during the shutdown, but the agency may have a temporary solution for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.

It’s called the National Deployment Team and it was created just last year.

It’s a group of TSA workers stationed all over the country ready to work at any airport in the event of a national emergency.

On Saturday, some of them were at Newark Airport, where wait times have averaged around a half-hour for security – among the longest waits at major airports.

Brian was coming home to Brooklyn Saturday. He said he noticed less TSA agents working.

“I could imagine when it gets busy, it’s going to be like a cluster,” he said.

More than 6 percent of TSA workers called out sick Thursday and officials have been bracing for a holiday weekend they say will see more than a 10 percent spike in travel.
