NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — A man and a woman died in New Rochelle Tuesday, after the car they were in crashed through a steel railing and plunged into the Long Island Sound.

The incident happened just before 3 p.m. at Hudson Park in New Rochelle.

Authorities said the driver suffered a medical episode before driving into the water.

“The car was weaving around the parking lot so we’re presuming he was having some kind of medical episode at the time, and then ended up going through the guardrail here into the water,” New Rochelle Police Commissioner Joseph Schaller said.

Witnesses at the scene also described seeing the car driving erratically through the parking lot at the beach.

“I just froze because I had to literally take a double take. I was just so surprised. I was like ‘what just happened in front of me?’ Then I realized. It clicked. Someone just drove into the water. Absolutely crazy,” Destinique McFarland told CBS2 News.

New Rochelle police’s marine unit, which is located near Hudson Park, responded almost immediately and pulled the driver from the submerged vehicle.

He was unconscious and unresponsive and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Sources say he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

There was reportedly also a female passenger found dead among the debris in the water.
