NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – No, it wasn’t a crash landing: the plane parked in the middle of Times Square was there Saturday to promote the rebirth of the iconic TWA Flight Center at Kennedy Airport.

It’s actually a return for the 1958 Lockheed Constellation airplane, which is nicknamed Connie.

Connie’s image flew high over Times Square on a billboard back in the late 1950s, according to Tyler Morse, CEO of MCR and MORSE Development, which are behind the new TWA Hotel.

“Connie is making her triumphant return to New York City as our cocktail lounge,” Morse said Saturday.

The lounge is part of the redevelopment of JFK’s TWA Flight Center, a 512-room hotel themed to the glamour of 1960s air travel.

Mayor Bill de Blasio called the terminal one of the great symbols of New York.

“We’re celebrating today our history. We’re celebrating the way we take our history and build upon it,” the mayor said.

Connie will stay in Times Square over the weekend before heading out to JFK.
