Wake To Be Held For Fallen Marine In The Bronx

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- A wake is being held inthe Bronx on Thursday for a city firefighter and U.S. Marine who died in the line of duty.

Staff Sgt. Christopher Slutman, 43, was killed earlier this month by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan.

Cpl. Robert Hendriks of Long Island Sgt. Benjamin Hines of Pennsylvania also died in the blast.

Slutman served 15 years with the FDNY before he was deployed last spring.

Slutman earned a Fire Chiefs Association Memorial Medal in 2014 for crawling through flames to rescue an unconscious woman inside an apartment fire in the South Bronx.

His funeral is scheduled for Friday at St. Thomas Church in midtown.

Slutman is survived by a wife and three daughters. The Sept. 11 charity Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation is helping the family by paying off the mortgage on their Yonkers home.

Slutman is the fourth FDNY member to die while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan since U.S. military action started in 2003.
