COPIAGUE, N.Y. (WCBS 880) A Long Island man is charged with second-degree murder after police said he fatally stabbed his estranged wife in front of the couple's teenage son, who was hurt trying to pry a knife from his father's hands.

According to authorities, 49-year-old Wayne Alcus got into an argument with his estranged wife, 55-year-old Patricia Alcus, inside her home on Lake Drive in Copiague around 7 p.m. Monday.

Their 18-year-old son, who was in a different room of the house at the time, heard the fight escalate and came running in to break up the argument.

"It was a very violent argument. He sees his father stabbing his mother," said Suffolk County Police Lt. Kevin Beyrer. "He takes the knife from his father. He did suffer wounds to his hands from the knife."

In court, the prosecutor says Alcus confessed to police saying, "I did it. I could not take it anymore. I killed her. She is in the kitchen."

Alcus was held without bail after pleading not guilty.

The two were married for 22 years.
