NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- A white powder that caused confusion at the Port Authority Bus Terminal during the Wednesday morning rush hour has been deemed non-hazardous.

Police were called at 9:13 a.m. Wednesday to investigate the unidentified white powdery substance discovered on the sidewalk on Eighth Avenue and 40th Street, WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported.

The Port Authority said there was no immediate danger to the bus terminal but authorities sealed off the exits going out to Eighth Avenue out of an abundance of caution.

They were reopened about an hour later.

Police did not evacuate the terminal, but some people reported being rushed out of the transit hub by law enforcement.

Bus operations were not impacted.
