Suspect In Williamsburg Attempted Rape Turns Self In To Police

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- A suspect in an attempted rape in Brooklyn has surrendered to police.

The alleged attack happened in the first-floor landing of a building near South 2nd and Havemeyer streets around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Police said the 26-year-old victim was able to fight off the man after he punched her in the back of the head, got on top of her and tried to rip off her underwear.

The suspect turned himself in at the 90th Precinct in Williamsburg on Wednesday morning after his family reportedly recognized him in surveillance video released by police.

The NYPD says 30-year-old Michael Almonte, who lives in the area, is facing charges of attempted rape, burglary, sex abuse, forcible touching, assault and harassment.
