Wolf Stolen From Holtsville Ecology Center

HOLTSVILLE, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- A hybrid wolf has been stolen from an ecology center in Suffolk County.

An employee at the Holtsville Ecology Center reported the 7-year-old wolf-dog mix named Nakita missing Monday morning.

Investigators have been at the center focusing not only on the cage where the wolf was housed but also two areas of a fence that were cut, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.

Authorities believe the wolf was taken around 4 a.m. Monday.

"We are concerned for the animal's welfare, we have over 100 injured and non-releasable animals here at the ecology center. They came in and took this one," said Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Dan Losquadro. "We can't speculate at this point whether or not someone took it as a pet, to sell, release it in the wild somewhere. Who knows. We really have no idea at this point."

Nikita is not known to be dangerous.

The wolf has been living at the center since last August when someone who had been illegally keeping the wild animal as a pet turned her over to the Suffolk County SPCA as part of Animal Amnesty Day.

No charges were filed against the owner.

The investigation closed the center on Monday.

Authorities are reviewing surveillance video for possible clues and have offered a $5,000 reward for her safe return.
