NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- A 27-year-old woman who went into labor inside a police holding cell in the Bronx and was forced to give birth while handcuffed to a bed, is now suing.

The New York Times reports doctors at Montefiore Medical Center warned officers that it was illegal and dangerous for the woman to be restrained during labor, but the officers allegedly said their patrol guide required it, superseding state law.

The woman, who asked the court to remain anonymous, says she was humiliated and traumatized by what happened to her.

“The most bizarre, draconian kind of practice and it's kind of on thinkable that anybody in the NYDP, in the year 2017 or 2018 would ever contemplate such a thing,” said Donna Lieberman, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union.

She believes it’s time for the NYPD to reevaluate how its treats women in custody.

“It cries out for bold action by the police department to address the sexist, discriminatory, macho culture of the police department,” Lieberman said.

The woman is seeking damages and a change in NYPD's policies.

The department says it's examining the allegations very carefully and will have no further comment before all the facts are in.
