Woman Found Dead Inside Trash Compactor At NYC Apartment Building

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Police are searching for answers in the death of a woman who was found inside a trash compactor in an apartment building near Union Square Tuesday evening.

Police say the 48-year-old woman -- identified as Lara Prychenko -- was found unconscious and unresponsive at around 5 p.m. at the 29-story Zeckendorf Towers at 1 Irving Pl. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman was captured on surveillance video walking alone on the 27th floor shortly before her body was discovered by a maintenance worker, WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported.

Residents say they were aware something had happened when they saw police vehicles and were instructed not to use the trash chute.

"It's terrible, I don't really know much," resident David Spurtle said.

It remains unclear how Prychenko ended up in the compactor.

"I don't know how you'd do it, it never occured to me to try to go into the garbage chute," Spurtle said.

"Nobody could figure how that could be accomplish, I guess that's why the police are here investigating because it's not easy," resident Santa Scarlotto said, adding that the woman was new to the building and she doesn't think foul play is involved. "She wasn't here very long and this building is very tight knit so everybody knows each other. I really don't think so and I think that's why everybody felt secure and didn't leave and nobody thinks there's a murderer on the loose."

The cause of Prychenko's death has not been released.

The sprawling complex was once home to former Congressman Anthony Weiner and his wife, Huma Abedin. Weiner is currently serving time for sexting a minor.
