NEW YORK (WCBS 880) A Westchester County woman is suing the rideshare company Lyft, claiming it discriminates against the disabled.

Harriet Lowell uses an electric scooter, so getting around can be a challenge.

She would like to take a Lyft, but the company won’t accommodate her, so she is suing.

“It's kind of humiliating for me to feel like I don't have more independence,” Lowell says.

Her attorney Jeremiah Frei-Pearson claims Lyft is violating the Americans with Disabilities Act, “In one word this lawsuit's about equality. It's about the right of people with disabilities to participate in Lyft. Right now Lyft currently refuses to serve people who need non-foldable wheelchairs or scooters.”

Lyft has not yet responded to requests for comment.

The company has claimed in the past that it is not a transportation company.
